Glaucoma is often called the silent thief of sight because it can develop without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. It damages the optic nerve over time, and many people do not realize there is a problem until vision loss has already begun. At Vision Source Magnolia, we emphasize early detection because regular comprehensive eye exams are the best way to catch glaucoma before it causes lasting damage.
Anyone can develop glaucoma, but some people face a higher risk. That includes adults over 60, Black adults over 40, people with a family history of glaucoma, and people with diabetes. Higher eye pressure is also a major risk factor, although glaucoma can still occur even when eye pressure is not elevated.
Your overall health and eye history can also play a role. Certain medical conditions, previous eye injuries, and long-term steroid use may increase glaucoma risk. Because risk is not always obvious, routine exams matter even for patients who feel their vision is fine.
There is currently no proven way to prevent glaucoma completely. What we can do is detect it early, monitor it closely, and begin treatment as soon as possible to help protect vision. That may include measuring eye pressure, evaluating the optic nerve, and performing other tests during a comprehensive eye exam. At our office, tonometry is one of the tools we use because increased eye pressure can be an important warning sign.
The best approach is to stay proactive with your eye health, especially if you have one or more risk factors.
Because glaucoma often develops without pain or early symptoms, waiting for warning signs is risky. Comprehensive eye exams give us the chance to detect changes before significant vision loss occurs. Vision Source Magnolia provides modern eye care, comprehensive eye exams, and glaucoma management to help patients in our community protect their long-term eye health.
