Myopia Managements

What is Myopia?

Myopia is a condition that causes objects that are close to appear clear, while those that are far away are blurry. Along with that, you may also experience eyestrain, headaches, and have to squint to see items clearly. While there is no cure for myopia, its progression can be slowed with the right treatment.

Managing Myopia

Since myopia, also known as nearsightedness, can get progressively worse, it is important to seek treatment as soon as possible. Our optometrists can help you manage the condition and preserve your vision. When you visit us, we will begin with an eye exam to learn more about your eye health and can recommend the necessary treatment after. This condition is often treated with eyeglasses and contact lenses. With the right prescription, we can help provide a clearer vision and prevent myopia from progressing. We work with each patient individually to prescribe eyeglasses, soft contact lenses, or hard contact lenses as needed, depending on their specific needs.

Sometimes, eyedrops similar to those used to dilate the pupils during an eye exam are also prescribed for myopia management. While the drops may not be able to improve your eyesight right away, they may be able to protect your vision in the long term. Our optometrists may also recommend orthokeratological lenses. These lenses are worn while you sleep and reshape the cornea, which changes the way light enters your eye and lands on the retina. The lenses are taken out when you wake up and you can enjoy clearer vision during the day.

For some patients, vision therapy can also be effective for myopia. Vision therapy is a series of exercises, which strengthens eye focusing and the eye-brain connection. Our eye doctors also provide suggestions on how to protect your vision and prevent your myopia from worsening. We can suggest when to take breaks from screen use, spending more time outside, and scheduling regular eye exams.
